Berkeley is Proposing Changes to Save Lives
Berkeley, California is trying to make history folks. A re-imagination of traffic duties and a proposal that is going to be under review in a meeting next Tuesday, July 21st that would have the transportation department take over traffic duties in order to curb the rate of violent traffic stops that occur alarmingly much.
Council-member Rigel Robinson recommended the transition to the transportation department. He is highlighting the deaths of Sandra Bland, Philando Castile and Maurice Gordon. “Far too often, routine traffic stops turn deadly… A serious discussion of the role of modern policing, and the harm is has disproportionately inflicted on Black communities, is incomplete without a focus on traffic enforcement.”
In a study done by a number of states, Washington, D.C. found that around 70% of people stopped by police are Black. DESPITE the Black community makes up for FAR less than half the populous. Seriously, how are people not understanding our issues. Berkeley, Cali also has a scary statistic with 8% of the area being black but 36% of drivers stopped being black! Like what??
This wouldn’t be an immediate change to a system that oppresses us without cause but it’s a step forward. It could also serve as an example for other areas. That was a note that those in favor of this proposal stated.
I have to say, that this will be a huge change and one to watch. If it works, we need to fight for this EVERYWHERE. It doesn’t matter if it cuts down the violence and death rate by a minimal percent. If it cuts down any loss of life it’ll be worth it in my opinion.
